Ramblin Man 2017 Day One: Rocking through the wind and the rain

CLASS music by class bands was enough to fortify the Friday audience at Ramblin Man Fair 2017 against the vagaries of wind and rain at Mote Park, Maidstone.

With the expansion of the festival opening day to the main arena the organisers made sure the line-up was a rabble-rousing bands that all could be defined under the banner of classic rock. However, that does the four bands no justice.

The acts' music was the soundtrack of the youth for many of the thousands gathered, and for others it was a look back to the history of hard rock and metal - songs that defined the musical landscape of today.

And none better to showcase the historical context than Graham Bonnet - a man who was the vocalist on many definitive albums. 'All Night Long', 'Night Games' and 'God Blessed Video' were among the many songs that had voices raised to the heavens.

His stamina on stage and the tight arrangements of Bonnet's band set the tone for the evening - music that no matter the subject makes the heart beat a little bit faster.

Last in Line also had the songs that have enough passion to power through any vagaries of the weather. Make no mistake, this band isn't some re-tread of Dio. They have their own identity.

Sure 'Stand Up And Shout', 'Holy Diver' 'Rainbow in the Dark', and 'We Rock' drew most response, but there is so much more to the set.

Andy Freeman does not slavishly ape Ronnie James' vocals, rather interprets them for his own style and the band dynamic. Vivian Campbell's solos have not only the distinctive stamp of the albums but are given a live flourish.

The fact that the band are now a recording entity in their own right will ensure their longevity - and at Ramblin Man 'Devil in Me' received an airing - and the dedication of 'Starmaker' to the late Jimmy Bain was an appropriate marking of the great man's passing.

For Y&T their recent travails was added to with the absence of Jonny Nymann due to a serious illness. However, the band's determination to play the date was clear and while at times it wasn't as tight this was not something that affected the mood and atmosphere.

With more than 40 years of experience and a catalogue of songs to chose from they served up a balanced set filled with songs that were instantly recognisable from the first couple of notes.

'Hurricane' as the opener perhaps suited the prevailing weather conditions but the wind and rain was ignored by an audience that revelled in ''Winds of Change'.

And, as many were making a return to Ramblin Man 'I'm Coming Home' was an appropriate choice. 'Mean Streak' and 'Rescue Me' were some of the more outstanding songs delivered.

With the strains of DC's 'It's a Long Way To The Top' reverberating across the arena the stage was quite literally set for Saxon, who arrived with a 'Battering Ram'.

Their blue collar metal, born before NWOBHM was defined, has a pure honesty running through it. Each track has a sentiment that has, in 2017, still remains fresh.

'Motorcycle Man', to coin a phrase, revved up proceedings and the audience sang along, buzzed with an electric feeling as each successive track saw the roars raised into the Kent night.

Biff is a consummate frontman, congenial, humorous and self-deprecating as he egged on the crowd and conducted the crowd like a metal ringmaster.

There may have been a sense of nostalgia, but that didn't mean there was any less enthusiasm. '20,000 Feet', 'Princess of the Night' and 'Wheels of Steel' turned the night bright with their familiarity.

Saxon power on and like the crowd they will 'Never Surrender'.

NEWS: Y&T set for Belfast return in November for Limelight1 show

OAKLAND rock veterans Y&T are making a welcome return to Belfast on Wednesday, November 8th for a Limelight1 show.

If it seems that Y&T have been around forever, its because they have...well since the 1970s. But Dave Meniketti is dragging his crew around the world once again.

It is a tribute to the band's resilience that Meniketti has picked them all up after the death of original bassist to lung cancer that Y&T still continue, all be it with only the one original member at the helm.

With 18 albums and a run of hits that are rotation somewhere in the world as you read this with songs such as 'Summertime Girls', 'Forever' and 'Mean Streak' stuck in the minds of those who grew up as music videos became the norm and MTV still had music on.

Tickets, priced £16.50 (+bking fee) go on sale this Friday

NEWS: Hard Rock Hell announce XI's line-up for November including Airbourne, Y&T and GuN

EVEN as Hard Rock Hell's triumphant flagship celebration of their first decade comes to a close,  HRH looks to the future with next year's festival.

It's no surprise that HRH have partied loud and hard in 2016, celebrating the landmark first 10 years of Hard Rock Hell on Earth.

The fans' ears are still ringing,  hearts pounding, and the awesome buzz and energy of the festival is still in the air as the fans head home, but head honcho Jonni and his team are already loading up for the eleventh Hard Rock Hell.

HRH are proud to announce another kickass, fan-picked line-up for 2017: Australian powerhouse rockers Airbourne and classic 70s American hard rock/heavy metal band Y &;T (originally formed as Yesterday & Today, and known as "one of the hardest-working blue-collar bands in hard rock history.")

From the U.K. come Glaswegian hard rockers Gun; also Syteria: the dynamic, female-fronted rock band from South Yorkshire. Then, adding European flavour to the proceedings, are The New Roses: Germany's most exciting, successful new rock act.

HRH XI will take place between Thursday 9th and Sunday 12th Nov 2017, amidst the beautiful landscape of North Wales, at Camp HRH in Pwllheli. Once again the HRH community and family will come together for the ultimate mash-up of loud, live music and malarkey that makes up an HRH event, along with the quality accommodation you'd expect from Europe's leading residential festivals.

"We're not resting on our laurels or anything else: 2017 is going to be the biggest adventure yet!"  promises CEO Jonni Davis,  with trademark passion,

"We're taking the HRH experience out to Australia, NZ and Singapore; meanwhile some fresh new branches are growing from the HRH tree here in the U.K. - new genres and niches of rock and metal that our community want us to add into the mix. It's going to be a Hell of a year, and of course we'll still be delivering our core events. HRH XI is going to be the best yet! Bring it on!"

All hail the Eleventh Coming! All hail Hard Rock Hell 2017!

This Friday night Nasa Assassin and Trucker Diablo are at Ma Nelson's; and if you want a full listing of local  rock and metal head over to RockRadioNI's gig guide or the Distortion Project pages.

Meanwhile there are still tickets available for Amon Amarth (with Grand Magus and In Solitude) at the Mandella on 18th March, UFO and Sweet Savage on the 21st March at the Spring and Airbrake, with Vain playing the same night at The Limelight.

Hang on to your hats then because WASP will be bringing their 30th Anniversary tour to the Ulster Hall on 24th September, with Y&T playing the Spring & Airbrake on the 29th of that month....

Damn it, I've probably missed a few out, but....who's heading to Download?

Who's going?

Y&T announce new bassist...and a return to Belfast.

LEGENDARY hard rockers Y&T have today announced bassist Brad Lang as the permanent four-stringer. Lang has been filling the bass duties for Y&T during the illness and eventual the tragic death of original bassist Phil Kennemore in January of this year.

And, Y&T are now set for a return to Belfast with a Spring and Airbrake show on 11th October this year.

Support comes from Zepperla and tickets are £16.50 plus £2 booking fee.

Here's the official blurb:
"Many of the biggest acts of the '80s became popular opening for headliners Y&T—and cut their teeth on the band, as evidenced by the Y&T mentions in tell-all books by acts such as Metallica and Mötley Crüe. Now after two sell out shows they are due to return to Belfast to play the Spring & Airbrake on Friday 7th October.

"Born in Oakland, California, Y&T is one of the San Francisco Bay Area's own innovators of the hard rock sound. World-renowned headliners on their own, the band also remained the most requested support act on the hard rock road, touring with icons Ozzy Osbourne, AC/DC, Aerosmith, Mötley Crüe, and more. Whether performing to a festival crowd of fifty-thousand or in an intimate nightclub, Y&T's high-energy set still captivates legions of fans around the globe, proving Y&T's music timeless.

"Originally formed as Yesterday and Today, the initial powerhouse quartet—featuring Dave Meniketti (lead guitar/lead vocals), Phil Kennemore (bass), Leonard Haze (drums), and Joey Alves (rhythm guitar)— tore through the '70s and '80s with their own brand of hard rock. After two '70s albums on London Records, they shortened their name to Y&T and released eight albums on A&M in the '80s. Two more albums with Geffen Records marked an era of change with Jimmy DeGrasso (Alice Cooper, Suicidal Tendencies, Megadeth) on drums and Stef Burns (Alice Cooper, Berlin, Huey Lewis) on guitar.

"With a discography of 18 albums and three greatest hits collections, Y&T has sold over four million albums since their 1974 inception. The band received extensive airplay with hits such as Forever, Rescue Me, Mean Streak, and Summertime Girls—which played in heavy rotation on MTV. Y&T songs have been featured in a multitude of movies and television shows, including Real Genius, Out of Bounds, Baywatch, and Hunter. After five top 100 albums, songs that tipped into the 40s, two Bammie Awards, and many international television appearances, Y&T's hits are still played on VH1 Classic and classic rock radio stations everywhere.

"In 2010, Y&T released their first studio album in 13 years, featuring original members Dave Meniketti and Phil Kennemore, along with longtime members John Nymann on guitar and Mike Vanderhule on drums, who were each hand-picked by Kennemore and Meniketti years earlier. As the title indicates, Facemelter is a hard rockin', song-oriented album that lives up to its name. Recorded mostly live in the studio, it captures the band's raw energy and tightness for which they've become known. Featuring heavy grooves, powerful guitars and strong melodies, the band shows their versatility, delivering a range of high- energy rockers, mid-tempo head-bangers, modern rock grooves, majestic ballads, and signature Y&T rock anthems.

"After a show in the mid-'70s, a rabid fan told the band, “You melted my face.” And as any Y&T fan will testify still today, Y&T's strong suit lies in their high-energy, power-packed rock 'n' roll set.

"With Kennemore's untimely passing from lung cancer, the band carries on the legacy that is Y&T. Y&T continues to tour the world, featuring Dave Meniketti (guitar/lead vocals), John Nymann (guitar/vocals), Brad Lang (bass/vocals), and Mike Vanderhule (drums/vocals), playing songs from Facemelter as well as all the hits and fan favorites. Prepare to have your face melted."

Slight erratum..

Slight erratum to a previous post...sobriety led me to claim that Keel would be supporting Y&T on October 5th. Support will instead come from hometown heroes Stormzone. Sorry about any confusion that may have been caused.

Not strictly metal, but we still like their quirkiness...support for Biffy Clyro on 28th October at St George's Market comes from the Atlanta based Manchester Orchestra and Pulled By Horses. Haven't heard either of these, but when you see the phrase 'alt-rock' in the blurb it can only mean one thing...head to the bar first :)

Up and coming

Further to the earlier post on up and coming gigs:

Y&T with support from Keel are about to be confirmed for the 5th October at the Spring and Airbrake...

Anal Cunt, Haggis and The Dangerfields will be at The Limelight on the 14th October as the only date on the 'Assholes and Troublemakers Tour'. As part of the evening there will be a spoken word MC appearance from Aussie ex-convict, author and refreshingly open Mark 'Chopper' Read.

The Sub-Humans will be at Auntie Annies on 9th September.

Thanks for the tips readers. I'll add details on each of the above acts when I have the chance (and am within touching distance of sobriety).
