BLOODSTOCK: The madness, the mayhem and the glorious music

WHEN it comes to festivals Bloodstock towers head and shoulders above most - and not just because they had the man mountain Johann from Amon Amarth present...

Genuinely friendly, a selection of bands to warm the cockles of every metalheads' hearts and a carnival atmosphere across the site.

Deep in South Derbyshire the very earth trembles every year and Bloodstock 2017 was no different...

With all weekend tickets sold out and day tickets at a premium it was perhaps one of the biggest adventures for BOA, but the scale was not too big to intimidate - apart from the enormous waits for entry. People who arrived clean shaven had a beard by the time they got in.

The queues were phenomenal on that first day, due to additional security steps, but that just meant some delay in erecting tents and heading back for beer stocks...well it is Bloodstock and you wouldn't expect anything else but ample beers.
By Mark Lloyd

The opening night always has a party atmosphere on the Sophie Lancaster Stage and rounding things off BattleBeast hit the right note of fun and heaviness. However, come Friday the heft of metal was to the fore.

A wealth of brutality bore down on the crowd as the usual races between stages to catch acts began in earnest. Decapitated drew heavily from their recent 'Anticult' release, and surprisingly for some many of those down the front knew each word and inflection.

When it comes to thrash Testament are among the godfathers. Chuck Billy was his usual larger than life self and the might of the tracks were evident - Bloodstock gathered as the 'Brotherhood of the Snake', headbanging happily.

With Blind Guardian delivering their symphonic majesty as the skies began to darken there was a real sense of anticipation. As many hurried from catching the excellent Lionize on the Sophie Stage Amon Amarth came on as if primed for a raid, ready to pillage.

Flames, massive Viking helmet, dragons, hammers - a proper stage show. All would be for nowt without the immensity of the songs. 'Runes to my Memory', 'Guardians of Asgard', and of course 'Twilight of the Thunder God' had the site bathed in glory.

They have appeared before at Bloodstock, but now are worthy headliners.

Saturday - more sunshine and the dash between stages in earnest as bleary eyed campers stumble forth to the familial camaraderie.

One of the more controversial choices was Flint, Michigan crew King 810, missing an axeman due to alleged firearms offence. Their abrasive off-stage attitude translated into one of the most challenging sets. Rather than have the big screens showing the band a series of disturbing images that forced those paying attention to consider their own attitudes. And as the crowd sang 'Fat Around The Heart' they may have redeemed themselves.

After another exemplary set from Annihilator - including some inter-song Canuck humour from Jeff Waters preceded mayhem.
By Darren McVeigh

No not the band Mayhem, but the mayhem that was Municipal Waste. Never in the field of human surfing has so many crowd surfed. As the punk thrash lasted a mere 45 minutes of intensity a total of 711 mad metallers crowd surfed - smashing any previous records by almost 300...Oh the music was good too.

Hatebreed teeter continually on the border between hardcore and metal, a dangerous place for some bands, but the fact that the Bloodstock community is more open-minded than most they were among the hits of the day.

Having consulted widely around Camp Midgard (well six people) we could not find anyone who has seen a bad Kreator set. The Teutonic thrashers are always good. They weren't at BOA 2017. No, they were fucking great. On another level that left many open-mouthed, agog at the tight, precise battering they were producing.

There was no way Ghost could top that. Sure their dark pantomime works for many, but the rotating membership, the choir et al sometimes grates as contrived. Macabre closing the Sophie stage are more intimidating - and better.

As if the preceding three days weren't enough Sunday was an absolute barnstormer.

But before that a word about the New Blood Stage. After months and months of battling bands won the right to perform at Bloodstock. It is a tribute to the quality of the acts that fought through dozens of heats on Metal2TheMasses that they attracted so many away from the main stages to see the emerging talent.

And, while we were impressed by many we saw, we are biased and thus a special mention for Shrouded. The Northern Ireland melodic death metal foursome could have easily been over-awed by the occasion, given their tender years, but stayed focussed, no faffing about - they came on stage and nailed it.

Over on the Ronnie James Dio stage masked Mexican metal banditos Brujeria tempered their assault with a cover of 'Oh Macharina' - yep it was that sort of day.
By Katja Ogrin

Segue from that into Possessed's power, Obituary's threat and Hell's theatricality it could be excused if the Bloodstock audience was feeling shell-shocked. But from somewhere they summoned up the energy for Skindred.

Exuding positivity in every word and every lick large proportions of the Catton Park site couldn't stop moving; dancing and grinning. Their reggae metal may not suit everyone's tastes, but it enlivened the day, and when 'Warning' played as a closer there was no doubt that the Newport Helicopter of thousands of t-shirts swirling made for an epic spectacle. Even the security staff lifted their hi-viz's aloft.

Arch Enemy offered a break from that communal silliness, but Skindred had given everyone a second wind and the 'Enemy seeped into everyone's bones.

Closing the main stage was Big Four members Megadeth. Well safe to say Dave did what Dave does, nothing more and nothing less.

As the dying strains of yet more widdly widdly guitar solos from Megadeth faded the job of closing the Sophie stage fell to Wintersun. Sure, it may have all the hallmarks of a vanity project, but somehow there is more of a life to the intricate self-absorbed tracks that works better on stage.

And, thus another Bloodstock drew to a close.

Another celebration of the outer reaches of metal that earns devotion; another celebration of a metal community that walks together, drinks together and yells each word with fervour and passion.

As the camp sites slowly emptied on a dank Monday there was the usual "see you next year" - and that's what makes Bloodstock special. For those with hearts steeled for metal it is one festival not to miss.

NEWS: Bloodstock add four more - Kreator and King 810 among the additions

BLOODSTOCK is powering ahead with even more bookings for 2017 with four more bands added to the already burgeoning line-up!

Remember how impressed we were with German thrash legends KREATOR when they played Dublin (review is here). They are now set to shred their way on to BLOODSTOCK’s main stage this Summer in Saturday’s special guest spot!

Vocalist/guitarist Mille Petrozza declares, “We are happy to finally return to BLOODSTOCK!  KREATOR will give you the full treatment this time.  WE SHALL KILL.”

The band released their fourteenth studio album, ‘Gods of Violence’ in January via Nuclear Blast.  Check out the video for the title track at:
https://youtu.be/xeUBJ2Ha-FM and get up to speed on all things KREATOR over at: https://www.facebook.com/ KreatorOfficial/.

Flint firebrands KING 810 land a Ronnie James Dio main stage slot on Saturday in a UK festival exclusive, so will be your only chance to catch the band on these shores this summer!  Their genre-busting album, ‘La Petite Mort (Or A Conversation With God)’ was hugely lauded upon release last year, with leading US outlet, Metal Injection pronouncing it “2016’s best example of what an album should be”.  Check out their visceral video for ‘Alpha & Omega’ at https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=gcLmQDr7GGw. This happened in Flint this week... https://youtu.be/QsmoWV_HQII.

Black metal marauders INQUISITION will headline the Sophie Lancaster stage on Friday.  The duo of Dagon and Incubus released their seventh album, ‘Bloodshed Across The Empyrean Altar Beyond The Celestial Zenith’ via Season Of Mist last August.  Listen to ‘Wings Of Anu’ from that disc at https://youtu.be/UGdbsGFrvbY and prepare for a ferocious finish to Friday night.

Lastly, KING PARROT fly in from their Aussie homeland for a Sophie stage slot. The self-dubbed “grindin’, thrashin’, punk wrecking machine” are on the road in support of their Phil Anselmo-produced disc, ‘Dead Set’.  Lend your ears at https://agoniarecords. bandcamp.com/album/dead-set, or watch their 2012 video for ‘Shit On The Liver’ at https://youtu.be/cinvIr-O1k8 - it was a finalist in the Australian Music Video Awards and has racked up nearly half a million YouTube views!  Learn more Parrot at www.facebook.com/ kingparrotband/.

Check out BLOODSTOCK’s latest video trailer here and get excited for August!

LIVE REVIEW: The Vikings Return To Take Dublin as Amon Amarth Slay The Capital.

FOUNDED by the Vikings in the tenth century, Dublin was once again host to the Scandinavian marauders on Wednesday night (2nd November), as Amon Amarth laid waste to the city’s Vicar Street venue.

Touring in support of latest album ‘Jomsviking’, the Swedish band put on a lavish show that featured lights, risers, and a gigantic horned Viking helmet that dwarfed the theatre’s stage.

Ably supported by thrash legends Testament and respected metallers Grand Magus, fans were treated to a three band bill that featured some of the finest acts in the genre, providing something to suit fans of most vintages.

Following a well-received set by Grand Magus, it was California’s Testament who were the first to really ignite the Dublin crowd. Opening with a punishing ‘Brotherhood Of The Snake’ – the title track from their just released 11th studio release, the band were in fierce form from the off.

With singer Chuck Billy growling, gurning, and air guitaring throughout, the animated front man commanded the crowd’s attention, as Testament made their way through tracks culled mostly from the polar ends of their career.

Concentrating on songs from their last few studio albums, including the title tracks from comeback disc ‘The Formation Of Damnation’ and its follow-up ‘Dark Roots Of Earth’, the band also pleased early fans with the "old school thrash metal" of ‘Into The Pit’ and ‘Over The Wall’.

Revealing a political conscience, Billy – a Native American himself, dedicated the track ‘Stronghold’ to the Standing Rock protesters currently demonstrating at North Dakota, telling the audience; “this song is for all the Native Americans standing strong for what they believe in”.

On any other night Testament would have been a tough act to follow, however with the sold out venue bursting to capacity, and a dedicated following waiting in anticipation, the atmosphere was palpable as Amon Amarth’s impressive stage set-up was revealed.

Centred around a huge Viking helmet complete with customary horns, that doubled as a drum riser, it was Amon Amarth’s sense of theatrics and other-worldly production that took centre stage. Kicking off, fittingly with ‘The Pursuit Of Vikings’, with a spectacular light show and myriad platforms, not to mention a highly energetic musical prowess, the five-piece proved a treat for the both the eyes, and the ears.

Greeting the crowd, singer Johan Hegg said: “Good evening Dublin. How the fuck are you guys doing tonight?”, before asking; “Are you going to have some fun?”. Going on to reference the capital’s Norse history, the singer revealed; “we love coming to play in Dublin, because you guys are crazy Vikings”.

Playing a healthy smattering of tracks from their critically acclaimed latest album ‘Jomsviking’, as well as fan favourites like ‘Twilight Of The Thunder God’ and a rousing ‘Deceiver Of The Gods’, Dublin was treated to a Viking raid the likes of which hadn’t been seen in the city for over a
millennium.

Amon Amarth’s ‘Viking Crusade’ continues with dates in London on Friday night (4th October) and Birmingham on Saturday (5th November), before making its way to the continent for an extended run.

LIVE REVIEW: Amon Amarth & Darkest Era - From The Viking Pit

MIGHTY Odin may have gazed with his one eye upon Belfast's Limelight1 on August 12th when the echoes of the heroic warriors spirits from Valhalla resounded like Loki's steed hooves flying across the roof of the world and Thor splitting the leaden skies with storms of metal.

The Celtic metal warriors who are Darkest Era opened up for the mighty Viking horde that are Amon Amarth - both with whirlwinds of riffs and unapologetic heavy metal.

And, what is there to apologise for when songs are so mighty, so deeply steeped in ancient oral traditions with allegorical undertows ripping the unwary from their comfort zone.

The last time I saw Darkest Era was when they opened for Wintersun and they left quite an impression then. Now, they are even coming through stronger, cohesive and cracking skulls with their pure take on the classic rock/metal of Maiden and Lizzy with melodic death metal twists.

Krum leads from the front, powering through releases new and old.  'An Ancient Fire Burns', 'The Morrigan' and 'Sorrow's Boundless Realm' all stamping all over the gathering crowd with tunefulness and rolling thunder from Cameron Ashlund-Glass' drums and Daniel O'Toole's bass.

Ade Mulgrew and Sarah Weighall lay down a superb set of inter-twined solos and rhythm parts - more evidence of why Darkest Era deserve to adorn many, many more metal fans collections.

With a relatively quick turnaround the stage was transformed to an homage to Amon Amarth's mythical landscape - replete with jagged 'rocks' and rune filled mini-monoliths.

From the opener 'Father of the Wolf' to closer 'Pursuit of Vikings' the Swedish five-piece proved that they are amongst the most exciting live bands.

It only takes a moment to suspend disbelief, plunge into the pit and soak up their tumultuous songs.

This was my first experience of being pummelled by Amarth - and I'd gladly succumb again.

It's not just that they put on a phenomenal live performance; it's not just because Johan Hegg is an engaging frontman; nor is it because they are tremendous musicians; rather it is because the sum of the parts comes together in one ominously glorious moment in time.

As a unit Amon Amarth are solid, tight and well-rounded, each playing their part. Mikkonen and Soderberg are linked by an ethereal bond as they use their six-string weapons to soar through solos, rip through rhythmic melodies and tear down any remaining inhibitions in the Limelight1

'Deceiver of Gods' and 'Cry of the Blackbirds' are majestic as Anderson (drums) and Lundstrom (bass) leaden the night as 'Guardians of Asgard' delivers as if Mjölnir had been wielded to split landscapes of Northern Ireland.

'Blood Eagle' saw the venue bathed - literally and metaphorically - in the life force of Vikings, while 'Embrace of the Endless Ocean' brought the narrative of the ocean bondsman and sailor to life.

By the time the encore of 'Twilight of The Thunder God' and 'Pursuit of Vikings' ended the crowd had responded to every exhortation of Hegg...and the very All-Father himself raised a toast to Amon Amarth and Belfast.

But Saturday is when it gets really busy....

Starting at three pm HMV and Limelight will host Flaws at the Donegall Place store's second floor. Flaws consist of members of the now defunct In Case of Fire, so you know what to expect.

Jenny from Ajenda
If you can catch your breath, doors open at 5pm at Limelight2 when James Loveday's Distortion Project's RockD presents a heavy, heavy evening.

Glaswegians Headless Cross top a bill which includes Slomatics, Wild Rocket and Tusks...earth trembling stuff.
