WHATEVER Prong are drinking we want several pints of it! Over the last five years they have released a series of albums that has had everyone sitting up and, well snapping their necks.
How they could follow up 'X-No Absolute' would have daunted many bands, but Tommy Victor rallied his troops and has unleashed on an unsuspecting world what is a contender for album of the year.
'Zero Days' is a belter of intense metal, delivered with powerful panache, measured fury and a collection of songs that harness ferociousness into a potent package.
The title track alone is enough to blow the hinges off the doors and raise the roof of the Voodoo in Belfast when they play on 19th July.
But it is also an album with subtlety, such as on 'Blood Out Of Stone' a tune that will have many hitting the repeat button. However, as a complete album this one deserves to be played over and over.
Victor's vocals sound as visceral as always, his playing locked into Mike Longworth's bass as if linked by a tractor beam, while Art Cruz balances solid playing with enough flourishes to punctuate each track.
For Victor it was a labour of love...
“I must say a lot of effort was put into this new 'Zero Days' recording," he said. "From the minute I would get off tour, I would consolidate ideas from the road and form new ones.
"Again the focus was on creating good songs. We wanted this record to be modern as well as holding justice to all the previous releases. Again and maybe even more than normally I went crazy meticulous with the lyrics. I had built up a lot to say and I wanted to articulate them in the most intelligent way possible. I firmly believe the mission was accomplished all around."
His reflective views on societal issues permeate the album, with tracks like 'The Whispers' and 'Ruler of the Collective' layered and powerful. Together with challenges such as on the awesome 'Forced Into Tolerance' this is thoughtful anger.
It is also a collection of tracks that refuse to be forced into one style - in typical Prong style they vary from thrash to groove, to almost doom (e.g. on 'Self Righteous Indignation') in a contrary and almost curmudgeonly defiance to be boxed in. And, that's exactly what makes Victor and co such a great band.
Potent Prong prove once again they are leading not following, bucking trends and critical bents to produce another special album!

RIGHT chaps and chapettes, those that were fortunate to head along to see Prong and Sinocence may have noticed we were there reviewing. So where's the review?
We, and our good friends at MetalPlanet, were on assignment from Devils Gate Media to pen and few words and capture some images.

NEWS: Prong, Slomatics, Ajenda in another busy week
AS hundreds prepare to venture from these isles to Bloodstock there is plenty still to be getting on with...
Before the mini-exodus tonight sees Sinocence support Prong at Limelight2 as part of Prong's Ruining Lives tour. And, Sinocence are promising a new song from the forthcoming No Gods, No Masters Vol2.
Could really be a night when you 'Snap Your Fingers, Snap Your Neck'
Thursday sees SO:NI present Smoking Tongue plus support at the King's Head, while Friday brings another SO:NI gig as Crossfire Hurricane lead a four-band slot.
But Saturday is when it gets really busy....
Starting at three pm HMV and Limelight will host Flaws at the Donegall Place store's second floor. Flaws consist of members of the now defunct In Case of Fire, so you know what to expect.
If you can catch your breath, doors open at 5pm at Limelight2 when James Loveday's Distortion Project's RockD presents a heavy, heavy evening.
Glaswegians Headless Cross top a bill which includes Slomatics, Wild Rocket and Tusks...earth trembling stuff.
As the riffs from Headless Cross shake your inner ear, it might be an opportune time to hop in the car and make the journey to Ahoghill for something to soothe battered ears.
The Diamond Rock Club will host Ajenda and Lomejor.
Got all that? Good. That's a nice wee warm-up for Amon Amarth and the mighty Darkest Era on the 12th August!

Monte Pittman - the man behind Madonna and delivering the metal with his album The Power Of Three
ON
his latest release Pittman give it the full Monte as the Power of
Three (review here), and he's played with the 'Queen of Pop' in the
shape of Madonna thanks to a chance meeting with her then husband Guy
Ritchie.

With
The Power of Three gaining rave reviews we caught up with Pittman to
try and find out how this metal guitarist could trace the beginnings
of the band in the long road since he began in his home town band Myra
Mains...and it turns out there is a common linkage between Madonna
and Prong, whom he also played with.
“There
are more similarities than you might think,” he explained. “They
both come from CBGB's in some way. Madonna played in a band that
played CBGB's and Prong formed from working there. Tommy Victor was
the soundman. These
things didn't happen at the same time but part of that seed is there
with both.
“Sometimes
I think of Prong as heavy dance music. The music can be complicated
but the tone is pretty straightforward. For Madonna, the song
structures can be complicated.
“There
is [sic] some genius songwriting techniques when you break some of
them down. It's more about what you don't play rather than when you
do play. Just like a painter doesn't just throw one color of paint
all over the canvas.”
With
that explanation it may not be 'metal' but what is Pittman's
favourite Madonna track to play?
“ 'Hey
You' might be my favorite,” said Pittman. “That was the very
beginning of the "Hard Candy" sessions. There were quite a
few acoustic tracks originally. Madonna and Pharrell left me in the
studio and trusted me with what I would do with the acoustic.
“It
was just me and Pharrell's engineer so I got to experiment with the
mics and parts in a killer studio. I layed down an assortment of
ideas for them to go through later."
Leaving
aside his work with Madonna The Power Of Three saw Pittman hook up
with the legendary producer of Metallica, Flemming Rasmussen.
“He
gave me a lot of tips and advice when I was working on the demos.
When it was time to start recording the album, I put him in complete
control,” he said.
“He
would always get us in the right frame of mind. There were times he
pushed us. There were times you almost forgot he was there. It was
wonderful having someone that I could completely trust with sound.
Amongst
the collaborations on The Power Of Three were Alex Skolnick and Chris
Barnes.
“I loved having those guys on the album. They are both friends of mine and people I also grew up listening to,” said Pittman. “Alex has played live with me as our fourth member a couple of times.
“Chris
hasn't yet but Chris joined us during a Prong show one night when we
were opening for Danzig on 'Whose Fist Is This Anyway?'.
“ It
was awesome. Imagine the ending with him singing! Me, Chris, and Alex
should start a side project or something!"
Given
the people that Pittman has played with and recorded with we wanted
to know which one was the most unlikely 'metal' fan.
“The only two main ones I've played with are Madonna and Prong so I guess Madonna. She's the kind of artist that appreciates a little bit of everything though,” he said. “Melanie C and Sophie Ellis Bextor were just studio sessions and weren't there when I recorded so I have no idea what they are into.
“Adam
Lambert and I had a band together before he went on American Idol and
he liked a little bit of everything too.”
Given the range of musicians Pittman has played with are there still collaborations he yearns to be part of?
“I
have always wanted to collaborate with Ozzy. Kelle Rhoads and I have
talked about writing some Ozzy type songs for fun,” he said.
“Kelle
played piano on my last album, "Pain, Love, & Destiny".
I have no idea why those two haven't done anything before.
“Kelle
and Randy's mom, Delores, is a musical genius. She has a unique way
of teaching and a unique way of how you perceive the notes like I've
never seen before. Kelle has that information. I would love to see
what all three of us could come up with.
“I
would collaborate with just about anyone as long as they're cool
personally. It would be cool to do something with Chris Cornell too.
But then again, both of those guys are now back with their original
bands, thankfully! Steve Vai would be cool.
When
Belfastmetalheadsreunited and Rockradioni reviewed the Power Of Three
all the editorial team thought 'Blood, Hunger, Thirst' was the stand
out track, and felt like a statement of intent for the three-piece;
but how did the writing of the music and lyrics come about?
“That's
one of those songs where I had different lyrics but then "Blood
Hungry Thirst" came to me and made much more sense,” he said.
“The music came from me jamming on the guitar. Sometimes you get in
a certain zone where everything flows just right.
“It's
kind of a fine line of being conscious and unconscious at the same
time. That's the case with this song.”
What
is sure to us, having had the glimpse into the range of musicality of
Pittman, and his band on The Power Of Three his answers to these
questions shows a man who has enjoyed a privileged break in the music
business, but is grounded enough to keep on exploring his metal
roots, his playing and ambitions to keep on growing.
The
Power Of Three is available now on Metal Blade.

"PRONG There is a price to pay for being the first at anything. PRONG have been carving their own brutal route since their formation only to see their distinctive sound borrowed, perverted and in some instances flat out stolen.
"With 1994’s landmark album Cleansing, PRONG cemented their reputation as leaders of the burgeoning industrial metal hardcore crossover movement. That album showcased a sharper yet more accessible sound with such MTV staples as the infectious “Snap Your Fingers, Snap Your Neck” and “Broken Peace”. The former of which became an MTV buzz clip and was very well received by the two most important critics of that era: Beavis & Butthead.
"The release of 1996’s Rude Awakening exposed PRONG’s songwriting prowess and many still say it was a victim of being too far ahead of its time. Rude Awakening paved the way for such artists as Static-X and Slipknot, drawing from many sources to create a new format for heavy guitar driven rock.
"After a seven-year hiatus PRONG returned with a new line-up and a new album, releasing Scorpio Rising in 2003. “I had to do something, no matter what it was” states mainman Tommy Victor. “Looking back, I don’t feel like it was an appropriate release under the PRONG moniker. I feel like the best is yet to come.”
"Victor spent the last year splitting his time between writing and touring with MINISTRY and writing the new PRONG album, using that time to hone the new PRONG material with a razorlike intensity. PRONG's staggeringly heavy new album Power of the Damager, is out now on Al Jourgenson of MINISTRY’s label 13th Planet Records.
"Power of the Damager is available from all retail and online outlets. It is also in stock and shipping now from the 13th Planet Store, which offers exclusive Prong shirts, signed posters and other items. The new album showcases an aggressive call to arms, blending the neck-snapping riffs the band is known for along with an even heavier approach to the hook and infusing that with an honest speed and aggression that lacks in so many newer acts. PRONG have returned to doing what they do best, and yet somehow it feels like something new all over again."

Been away a while...but back with a vengeance...
For various (boring reasons) and not least owing to dangerous levels of blood in my alcohol stream, Belfastmetalheadsreuited has been down for a while...now it's back, and back with a vengeance.
Over the next few days there's much to catch up on...here's a flavour:
Countervela, Triggerman and Gacys Threads. Auntie Annies on Thursday (tomorrow!)
The Metal Blade Assault tour lands in Belfast on April 4th with The Rotted, Malefice and Anterior in the Limelight;
Charity metal with Residual Effect and others on April 7th at The Black Box (in aid of the Haematology Unit at the RVH);
Cancer Bats/Rolo Tomassi/Psychic Kids at the Spring & Airbrake on 23rd April;
Paradise Lost, Grim Reaper and a host of others ripping apart the Mandella Hall for an all ages Full Metal Racket at the Mandella Hall on April 25th;
Saxon and Sweet Savage...the next night!
The new A Little Bitter album (New Dawn Evolution) launched on May 2nd at The Limelight
Firebirds/Gentlemen's Pistols/Skypilot descending on Belfast on 5th June;
Prong playing the Spring & Airbrake on 14th June; and...and....
Therapy? in Derry (May 14th), The Answer in Belfast (20th April), Tesla (June 11th), UFO (June 12th), the possibility of a November Deep Purple Belfast show (keep that one to yourself...), Nine Inch Nails and Jane's Addiction playing Oxygen in July...Onslaught coming to Belfast on August 28th
Damn there's so much more to catch up on, so much more to share we're off to share a shandy, batter a brandy and intimidate a Jagermeister (though not necessarily in that order!)
More and more posts coming your way...thanks to everyone who commented, emailed, complained, nagged, whined and gave off that the blogs were not coming as think and fast as y'all wanted!
