Douglas Adams epic stories under the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy stories featured the loudest band in the history of the universe Disaster Area...a band so big on a galatic scale that their guitarist had to spend a year dead for tax reasons.
But they had a problem with their drummer...
Which is a very roundabout way to say that one of Norn Iron's finest, Residual Effect is looking for a new man/woman to slot in behind the kit and lay down heavy as hell beats, double bass mania and battering any skins living or dead that falls within the range of his sticks.

Redemption
After my mini-rant about turn-outs was nice to see a well-filled Limelight for tonight's Sinocence gig. In between a series of unavoidable commitments I nipped in and caught 15 minutes of Residual Effect. They were, as usual, laying down an awesome wall of extreme metal noise. Would have loved to stay for the rest but...anyone want to comment on the rest of the acts? Post away please!

Quick rant before moderate tone returns...
A Little Bitter kicked off the RockD summer programme on Saturday past. Ably assisted by Niyah Sky and Arcane, A Little Bitter opened the Limelight's metal doors with a bang. New tracks meled with old favourites in a cacophony of melted musical mayhem of the best type.
The only problem was there were barely a smattering of people who bothered there arses to show up. Now c'mon people - £5 in for three bands is damn fine value in these financially straitened times.
Now pay attention - the following RockD events are scheduled for The Limelight. A roll call will be taken and metal head status may be revoked if 50% attendance at the following gigs is not recorded :)

Important Distortion Project News
Important announcement from James of the The Distortion Project...
"As part of our continuing involvement in the metal scene, and our dedication to both local bands and international touring bands, as well as our desire to offer bands a better type of Distortion Project show, we are pleased and proud to announce the following:
"From the Saturday 2nd of May onwards, all rocKD shows will take place in the Limelight. This will allow us to do a number of things.
"Firstly, there will be 3 bands every week, as opposed to two and there will be a new (later) door time of 5.00pm.
"There are plans afoot to knock through the Kitchen in the Limelight to create a smoking area, and a place where people may set up stalls to sell their wares - a kind of "metal-market" type thing similar to what you get at festivals. (interested parties drop me a line about this).
"There are also plans to extend the curtain where the small bar is, to make the venue smaller on less busy days, so it wont feel as if the bands are playing to nobody in a big empty hall.
"I'm particularly pleased about this upgrade, as it will now give the bands full use of the Limelight, a bigger stage and a better gig overall. The new curfew is now 9pm All bands that I have booked to play after May 2nd for a Saturday show will now be in The Limelight.
"May is the month of album launches it seems, so here is the full rundown for that month.

Been away a while...but back with a vengeance...
For various (boring reasons) and not least owing to dangerous levels of blood in my alcohol stream, Belfastmetalheadsreuited has been down for a while...now it's back, and back with a vengeance.

Soundstone rock...Maiden score a Brit...and A&R reveals lazy secrets
A weird, weird time on Wednesday night's TV.
First Maiden score a Best Live Award at the Brits (a metal act getting a mainstream award...WTF!). To stay on the weird theme it was allegedly through BBC Radio 2. On the surface this could be because us long established metal bands such as Maiden are now regarded, like the old rockers of Jagger, Richards, Daltrey, Page, Plant et al as 'institutions' and not worthy of the cutting edge Radio 1 .
It could be many things, but the truth is that more Maiden fans sent emails to the Brits than the so-called fans of the other utter shite that was up for the award. [And more than a few readers of this blog...Bruce owes us all a pint or 6!]
Needles to say this one-off was not to be repeated and AC/DC didn't get their just reward, but then that would have meant critics would have had to admit that the ancient Aussies rock harder than any of the miming twats and superannuated losers (Bono, Weller?) on display.
That overly long rant is all I am going to say on the 'Brit' Awards, except to mention that having dipped in and out of it most of it was unmitigated shite.
A beer and Jack later UTV's news segued into their Live at The Limelight show...cue rant number two...
This was filmed seemingly an age ago. Presented by bubbly airheads and half informed reporters (you have no idea how many takes that first introduction took!) the show kicked off with Banbridge's Soundstone.
Having had the privilege of being there during filming it was a faithful record of an act who took a wee while to warm up during 'Devil' but really got going on 'My Crime'. Despite an awkward mix and unfamilar set-up Soundstone kept going and proved that with the right support they should be counted among the many deserving of a breakthrough from Northern Ireland's musical backwaters á la The Answer.
Then....oh fucking dear my beating hard rock metal heart...a blonde presenter interviewed the blonde A&R woman from the 'record label'. Now I have many friends that are 'blonde'. I even number a few ginger-tops among my friends. But these two 'blondes' offered nothing of any substance and, were I to be so unkind, might even be said to be air-headed blondes that give the rest a bad name!
Worst still the A&R woman revealed why rock and metal have to go the long hard road before getting any success.
She tellingly revealed how her and her contemporaries picked acts...they looked at their myspace sites, looked at the band's top friends and then heaven help me went to a live night...and then hoped the band were radio fucking friendly!
Well as she and her ilk seem to be slow of thinking I suggest they do some real research rather than surfing for the next big thing on the 'net...unless they care to breeze by here of course.
Here's a wee starter for them as to where the cutting edge can really be found should they choose to do some research...
These figures are based on the Audit Bureau of Circulation figures. That is the trade body that monitors sales of printed outlets. Kerrang! sells 52,272 copies a week. Metal Hammer sells 50,269 copies a month. Classic Rock sells 70,188 copies a month. Even the sub-genre publication Terrorizer (and how I love the hidden gems on the Fear Candy covermount CD samplers) sells a healthy 13,788 copies a month.
At the same time that so-called cutting edge publication NME sells 48,459. The cutting edge for these bampots is more likely to be the mime induced mediocrity that pervades prime time TV, or Indie shoe-gazers.
Rock and metal has never been about a popularity contest, but the numpties, headcases, poseurs and empty headed programme chiefs, have neither the wit nor the wisdom to acknowledge that from the mega stars such as Maiden, Metallica, and DC, through to our local rock warriors like The Answer, M$R, A Little Bitter, Residual, Soundstone, and a hundred others, there is more talent, more originality, more commitment, and more loyalty from fans than the fickle prejudices of TV programme commissioners or London based A&R people will ever know.
Before leaving this rant...well it is a bit of a rant...it is worth noting that UTV commissioned this show as part of what is known as its Public Service Broadcasting (PSB) requirement. The regulator, Ofcom, required that ITV licence holding stations show a set amount of local produced PSB shows. UTV and others are no longer required to produce as many hours, so shows like this (which one suspects was only commissioned to licence requirements!) will never appear again.
Well done to Soundstone for reminding viewers that there are genuine acts out there; well done to Maiden's fans who voted, and come the revolution any A&R prat who hasn't signed a rock or metal act will be force fed Cannibal Corpse and Slayer CDs until they recant their evil ways!

Busy week of hard rock and metal ahead!
As if Saturday's awesome double bill of metal, when Dragonforce and Turisas laid waste to the crowd at the Mandella Hall, wasn't enough there's a helluva busy week of hard rock and metal ahead!
Tomorrow (Tuesday) Raging Speedhorn, backed by local noisenicks Residual Effect and Stand-Up Guy, blast the Bunkers.
On Wednesday, Funeral for a Friend (new darker, harder album out today), Cancer Bats, In Case of Fire, and Attack Attack are at the Spring and Airbrake.
And on Thursday The Answer play the same venue before heading off to support AC/DC on their Black Ice US tour!

Rock for Mozambique....

A charity fundraiser for Habit for Humanity's Mozambique project is being held with a line-up that promises to rock like the proverbial bastard!
Headlining will be Triggerman with their trademark preacher metal. Supporting will be Escape Fails, still on a high after their début CD launch. Also in the line up will be Soundstone (and if you have any love of classic hard rock you really have got to hear them!) and Dwell in Sun.
As if this wasn't enough Baggy's Death By Video will be opening the proceedings and linking.

Too f***in' hot
It really is too fucking hot...both the gig listings and the temperature! Was in London today and yesterday (missed Ollie Dawson as a result but got smashed at the Crobar...!) and temperature was in the 30+ category. Enough of my misery and some gigs coming up...
On 8th August Waylander are introducing a wee CD to Belfast...it's been getting reviews in Kerrang! Metal Hammer and Terrorizer and the reception has been positive so far (well if it wasn't we'd head to their offices for a wee explanation about Norn Iron battle metal!) and Honour Amongst Chaos on Listenable Records is well....well worth a listen!
And the next day...RSJ and Residual Effect (with Stand-Up Guy and Two Tales of Woe) will be rocking RockD at Katy Daly's. And if you can still stand/function/walk Triggerman, Escape Fails, Soundstone and Dwell in Sun will be performing in the Spring & Airbrake....phew!
With Overoth, Last Judgement and Solace of Nadir on the 16th at Katy Daly's and too much to even mention... ahh hell you know I will mention it all again soon.

And the next day...RSJ and Residual Effect (with Stand-Up Guy and Two Tales of Woe) will be rocking RockD at Katy Daly's. And if you can still stand/function/walk Triggerman, Escape Fails, Soundstone and Dwell in Sun will be performing in the Spring & Airbrake....phew!
With Overoth, Last Judgement and Solace of Nadir on the 16th at Katy Daly's and too much to even mention... ahh hell you know I will mention it all again soon.
In the meantine I shall be crawling into a nearby freezer...before emerging refreshed, reasonably sober and ready for bottle or draft!

Residual Effect back and rockin!

The words of Residual Effect's fearsome frontman Micky Higgins – but more than that; it's the ethos that keeps Residual Effect alive and relevant to fans of metal played with an intensity and purity few can rival; few dare to try…
Northern Ireland has a burgeoning metal scene – Residual Effect were in the vanguard and they intend to lead from the front again.
After a brief hiatus that saw them recruit a new man on the sticks – Gerry Gallagher - Residual Effect are back on the road and back rehearsing new tracks for a forthcoming release.
And now for those who need a reminder...
Formed in 2004, Residual Effect have two releases under their collective belts: the Residual Effect EP and 2006 album 'In A World Where Pain is God'.
They've already played with acts such as Raging Speedhorn, Soulfy, Devildriver, Nevermore, Panic Cell, American Head Charge, Soil, Cephalic Carnage, Skinless, Born From Pain I Remain, Visceral Bleeding and RSJ.
"We've earned respect from our peers here in Northern Ireland and from much further a field," said bassist Anthony McKee. "Some of the bands we're played with gave us kudos, some admitted we blew them off the stage, some gave us only grudging respect.
"But no-one could challenge our ferocity, or our honesty."
In some of today's simpering, so-called metal such sentiments could be seen as hyperbole at best, arrogance at worst. But from Residual Effect they are a genuine reflection of the confidence of the band; confidence that comes from knowing they can deliver the goods.
And to paraphrase Micky…they don't intend letting up anytime soon!

Been away - but we're back
Been a long time since we all rock 'n' rolled with y'all - but we're back!
Short story, long story, in mini-version - sponsors were almost secured for the site; they asked us to hold posting for a few weeks to help get details sorted, examine proposal...two weeks went by, three weeks went by...finally after an exchange of emails...
"We're sorry, but after consideration, while the reach of your site is impressive your core demographic does not match our target audience."
Well, I'll not name them, but what did they expect with a site called Belfast Metalheads Reunited!!!!
Anyhows, anyway we're back! Plenty of posts and gig information to come up...keep reading...short info burst now:
