NEWS: Supergroup? Giraffe Tongue Orchestra...William Duvall, Brent Hinds, The Dillinger Escape Plan etc

"Supergroup” isn’t a word that often sits well with a lot of music fans. For some, it conjures thoughts of bloated egos battling for creative control. For others, it brings to mind flash-in-the-pan projects that lacked a lasting impact.
William DuVall, frontman for Alice In Chains, is ready to change everyone’s opinion on the subject with Giraffe Tongue Orchestra (GTO). DuVall, joining forces with Brent Hinds, lead shredder for heavy metal giants, Mastodon, and Ben Weinman, founder and lead guitarist of hardcore legends, Dillinger Escape Plan, is already generating incredible anticipation among fans and the press, which has fondly and excitedly dubbed them a supergroup.

They have just released their début album, 'Broken Lines'. The video for single 'Blood Moon' is below
GTO’s debut album promises to show and prove what this supergroup can really do by unleashing a sonic onslaught on all who are ready to rock! Don’t just take our word for it, the hype is real.
The line-up

 WILLIAM DUVALL  (ALICE IN CHAINS)
 BRENT HINDS  (MASTODON)
BEN WEINMAN  (THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN)
 THOMAS PRIDGEN  (THE MARS VOLTA)
PETE GRIFFIN  (DETHKLOK, ZAPPA PLAYS ZAPPA)

COMIN' ATCHA: Nothing to do? Bored? Well you won't be this week!

HOW many keyboard warriors does it take to change a lightbulb? Answer: None, they'd rather stay in the dark. By the same measurement we always hear from the key clicking bunch about there being nothing to do, no gigs etc etc etc.

How wrong they are. Take the next five days as an example...

Tonight NOLA stalwarts and stoner maestros EyeHateGod play Limelight2 with support from the mighty War Iron and Burden  of the Noose.

Come on! It's hump day so you can get a break from the drudge of the office with some righteous noise.

Thursday, however, is when the weekend unofficially starts...who works that hard on Friday anyway? So on Thursday night you can wend your way to Paradise City's 30th Birthday show in the Voodoo. Helping Paradise City blow out the candles will be Sinocence, St Hellfire and the last ever gig from Worldsend.

Last chance to see 'em folks so get along and raise a glass to them!

Friday....ahh the joy of walking out the door of the office/factory/coal mine (apologies to weekend workers...call in sick say you're suffering from metal deficiency!).

Not normally the preserve of rock venues, McHugh's Bar is hosting Pat 'The Professor' McManus. If you have ever seen Pat play you know he is an entertainer and the real deal when it comes to guitar heroes.

Speaking of heroes, 'Tallica always hailed NWOBHM act Diamond Head as their heroes. The question of whether we can ask 'Am I Evil' remains moot, but Diamond Head play Limelight2 on Saturday, with support from Rabid Bitch of the North and Conjuring Fate. Tasty!

When it comes to taste, your delicate taste buds should be wet with drooling saliva at the prospect of Mastodon playing in the Ulster Hall. Anyone who saw them last time knows just how good - no great they are live.

And, the fact that they were all 'killed' by White Walkers in Game of Thrones adds ever more to their kudos score.

Support from Bad Breeding.

And, if the prospect of Mastodon seems too much (get thee behind me!) there's always Lo Mejor at the Hudson.

Tickets for all these shows are available at the various doors.

Nothing to do? Bored? No shows in town? No gigs? These are five days when you can experience the varied delights of rock and metal in Belfast, where, as Mr Daly of CJ might say the eagles fly.

See y'all there!

Hybrid theory success as Killer Be Killed defy definition

SUPERGROUPS and side projects...they can be hit or miss at the best of times, but when you combine hard-hitting, talented metal musos familiar with the side project concept and demanding the highest standards of themselves it's a sure-fire hit.

Killer Be Killed - Greg Puciato, Max Cavalera, Troy Sanders, and Dave Elitch. The combined pedigree of these four in the metal pantheon is well documented and well known. But pedigree is one thing, when you put all the parts in a mongrel, hybrid, amalgam surely it can't work?

But it does. And as to what it sounds like- here's what they say:

“This is a very special project. It’s a one of a kind thing, with a lot of potential,” said Cavalera. “The album is a mix of heavy, fast and melodic songs.”

“It’s a bit of Sabbath-y doom, a bit of thrash, a bit of hardcore and punk,” Puciato said.
What they don't mention is that there are also many progressive elements lurking in the soundscape, no doubt partly as a result of Sanders' influence.
As a statement, Cavelera's defiant growl on the title track (and band name) "We are what we are" sums up to a large extent what this band is - an attempt to distill four different musicians in  a heavy project that differs from the participants usual turf, but is instead a mélange of metal, with the edge of punk.
Vocal duties are shared between Puciato (The Dillinger Escape Plan), Cavalera (Soulfly, Cavalera Conspiracy and many more) and Sanders (Mastodon) while Elitch (Mars Volta) produces impressive rhythms and fills: his talent exposed behind a trio well used to having creative eclectic drum lines.
What it all combines to make is one hell of an aggressive, charged album. While it doesn't veer too much from the extreme metal template, it is the flourishes and melodic lines that stand out, along with Sanders and Elitch's pattern weaving.
Opener 'Wings of Feather and Wax' and 'Curb Crusher' manage to achieve that delicate balance of melody and brutality. Definitely top notch songs but as with all the Killer Be Killed tracks they defy easy categorization beyond agreeing with Pucuiato's statement above.
For example the techno start to 'Save The Robots' melds into a mid-paced (comparatively speaking) intro and first verse, which then pushes furiously into a mid-section and then slows down to a crushing riff behind spoken lyrics.
The variety in each song could be seen by the less well attuned as throwing everything in, including the metal kitchen sink, but that is to miss the point. Each member has their own take on this mad metal world we love: blending them together with the skill of gardener growing new varieties of roses is no easy task.
The mathcore, death, exteme, prog, hardcore and punk elements could overwhelm the sound, but the production of Josh Milbur (whose credits include Gojira, Lamb of God and...Steve Earle) has a definite separation that allows the elements to come through clearly.
It is also a politically charged album in terms of lyrics. 'I.E.D.' and 'Snakes of Jehova' are perfect examples of casting a cynical eye on a dystopian world. 'I.E.D.' is perhaps one of the stand-out tracks, with a definite mission to deliver muscle with finely judged bridges and breakdowns as Cavalera rages.
But in singling that track out, it is perhaps fair to say that listeners will highlight their own choice: 'Dust into Darkness' and 'Fire to your Flag' could equally have been our choices, as could 'Facedown' or any of the tracks.

Puciato and Sanders vocals complement the mix, which could have so easily been dominated by Cavalera's distinctive growl against the backdrop of such an in-your-face album.
Killer Be Killed should not work - but it does in a way many so-called crossover acts would kill for. Each listen of this album has you discovering new elements and facets to the sound and structure of tracks - and surely that is the sign of an album worth the effort from those who conceived this hybrid.
Killer Be Killed is out on Nuclear Blast

Mastodon, Zeppelin and Radiohead...read on!

WELL, no Belfast date, but don't forget your June slice of prog-metal weirdness as Mastodon play in Dublin on June 12 and 13th at The Academy - given the first night clashes with Slayer and Walking Dudes in Belfast some might be tempted to see the Atlanta men once again.

The gigs are as The Hunter tour draws to a close and they begin work on their sixth album to date.

Brent Hinds has been giving some hints as to what we can expect from the men who take progressiveness to the next level, add large doses of heaviness and then crack your skull (and Skye!) with musical dexterity.

"A lot of the stuff I'm writing is in open G-Minor," said Hinds. "I'm playing a lot of slide guitar and just getting really Jimmy Page-y on the place and getting really eerie and Radiohead-ish and very spooky soundy."

Mastodon with a mix of Led Zep, Radiohead and their usual manic metal flourishes...we can't wait!

Seems that over the past week there has been a flurry of bands rumoured to be on the bill when Metallica play Marlay Park on August 1st.

Thanks to all the tips and suggestions, but all that can be confirmed (at least for the next day or so anyway!) is that the two-day Sonisphere event in England (at Knebworth) will see Linkin Park, Machine Head, Avenged Sevenfold, Lamb of God, Mastodon, Thin Lizy, Alice in Chains, and The Sword play the two-day festival.

More bands are to be added (in the war of metalfests being run between Sonisphere and Download!) but which from the announced list will be added to the Dublin date remains to be finally confirmed. And, which ones can be persuaded to play a wee gig in Belfast on August 3rd? Well, we can but hope!

Trivium Irish/Norn Iron tour

The first dates have been announced for Trivium's December Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland tour.

Expected to be a four-date wrap after the Unholy Alliance slots with Slayer and Mastodon, the Trivium mini-tour kicks off in L/Derry's Nerve Centre on December 4th - the same night Mastodon are playing the Spring and Airbrake.

The only other confirmed Trivium date is in Cork on December 7th...so between the 4th and 7th - go figure it out for yourselves :)

Trivium divide opinion. On some of the forums, and among those that consider themselves (rather foolhardily for ones so young - said the wrinkly rocker who writes this crap!) the true voice of metal.

There is no 'true voice of metal' just opinions.

If you don't like Trivium, fair enough (As Baal said: "We were there first time around) but there are many who do. And it is these, who through the likes of Trivium, Bullet for My Valentine, Avenged Sevenfold etc reprensent the next wave of young people who get firmly hooked on metal. It is this next wave that will learn to experiment with the wider metal genres, who will when they reach 18 head to the bars to listen to local acts, buy local acts CDs and even form bands themselves.

So if you feel tempted to slag off this crowd of younger metallers, perhaps you need a wee bit of growing up yourself! Encourage them! Better their going to a metal gig than listening to rave, Kylie or Satan help me Beyonce...

(PS - I pretty much like Trivium - yes the writing is a hybrid 'Tallica and 'Deth, but so what!)

PPS - Belfast and Dublin dates - if they happen will be announced early next week

Mastodon for Belfast

American metallers with a penchant for complexity, chaos and concepts, Mastodon are set for a return to the Spring and Airbrake on December 4th.

No doubt taking advantage of their slot on the Unholy Alliance III Tour (with Slayer, Trivium, and Amon Amarth) to fit in a three-date Northern Irish/Irish tour this looks set to be yet another pre-Christmas pressie for Belfast metalheads!

Permiership players unfit...drummers kick ass instead!

It's official drummers are as fit as premiership footballers! According to Chichester University drummers rock out with a heartbeat at 190 beats per minute. But given they only tested Blondie's drummer Clem Burke we reckon they're not pushing the envelope at all!

Imagine if they'd tested Tom Lombardo, Brann Dailor, Neal Peart, or even a host of Norn Iron metal drummers....premiership footballers would fade in their wake!
